Career

Khuli Chana rose to fame after releasing his highly successful album Motswakoriginator, which blended Setswana and English. Motswako, the style he is known for, originated from Mahikeng, a small town in the North West Province.

Before the release of Motswakoriginator, Khuli faced rejection from every record label he approached, leading him to independently release the album. The project became a massive hit, cementing his place in the South African rap scene.

His second album, Lost In Time, was released in 2012 and won three awards at the 2013 South African Music Awards (SAMAs). That same year, he gained international recognition, earning nominations and even winning an award in Canada. However, 2013 also brought a major setback when South African police mistakenly identified him as a suspect and shot at his car, injuring him.

In 2014, Chana was nominated for Most Valuable Artist and Video of the Year at the South African Hip Hop Awards. He went on to release his third album, One Source, in 2017, overcoming various challenges along the way. His last album, Planet of The Have Nots, dropped in 2019.

Khuli Chana has shared a stage with Canadian rapper Drake as an opening act. He also partnered with vodka brand Absolut as a South African ambassador.

Personal Life

In 2013, Khuli Chana was shot by police in a case of mistaken identity while sitting in his car. The incident was a major blow to his career, sparking speculation and controversy. However, he fully recovered, cleared his name, and later settled out of court for R1.8 million.

On the personal front, Khuli Chana was initially in a relationship with actress Asanda Maku. Their relationship appeared strong, and they welcomed their daughter, Nia, in 2014. Khuli has often shared that Nia played a big role in reigniting his passion for music. Despite their bond, he and Asanda eventually parted ways.

Later, Khuli Chana began dating DJ and television personality Lamiez Holworthy. Although they kept their relationship private at first, their social media posts—especially pictures from a Zanzibar trip—hinted at their romance. In September 2019, Lamiez was spotted wearing an engagement ring, and by November, the couple had tied the knot. Since then, they have remained inseparable.
