Thato Sikwane, born on October 15, 1972, and widely known as DJ Fresh, is a renowned Motswana disk jockey, producer, and entrepreneur based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He rose to fame in the 1990s, gaining recognition as a prominent host on Johannesburg’s YFM radio station. DJ Fresh’s influence extends beyond radio, as he is also known for his work as a producer, particularly in the South African house music scene.
He became especially famous for his series of South African house music compilations, titled “Fresh House Flava.” The series, with multiple volumes produced over the years, became a staple in the house music genre, solidifying DJ Fresh’s place as a key figure in South Africa’s music and entertainment industry. His work on popular radio stations like 5FM and Metro FM further contributed to his widespread popularity and success.
Life and Career
Thato Sikwane, widely known as DJ Fresh, discovered his passion for deejaying while still in Botswana before relocating to South Africa in 1994 to pursue his studies. He obtained a Media Studies diploma from Boston Media House in Johannesburg, and during his third year, he began his career at YFM. Fresh spent eight successful years at the station before moving to 5FM, where he hosted the highly popular “Drive Time” show for over a decade. His career continued to thrive, and in 2017, he transitioned to Metro FM, where his “Fresh Breakfast Show” became a favorite among listeners. However, in August 2019, DJ Fresh was dismissed from Metro FM after a listener lodged a complaint with the BCCSA regarding inappropriate language he used during a live broadcast.
After his departure from Metro FM, Fresh took over the “Drive Time” slot at 947, but was later dismissed following rape accusations. Outside of radio, DJ Fresh has appeared as a guest judge on television shows like “Idols SA,” “SA’s Got Talent,” and “Tropika Island of Treasure SA.”
In 2002, DJ Fresh married Thabiso Sikwane, and they have three children together. However, the couple separated in 2020, beginning the process of divorce.
In 2022, DJ Fresh co-founded Domboshaba Records with Zimbabwean producer/DJ Tich Ponde, also known as Shona SA. The record label focuses on Afro House music, and together they released an album, “The Beginning,” in October 2022, featuring artists such as Rock’itMan, Nomvula SA, and Audius. In 2023, DJ Fresh released his own studio album, “Voices of Hope 2,” which includes 13 tracks and features a range of artists like Shona SA, Gouveia, TorQue MuziQ, Starr, Bongiwe Indlovukazi, Mazet SA, Sazi Cele, and Thabiso Sikwane.
