DJ Mahoota, born Zynne Sibika in Soweto, is one of South Africa’s most influential urban music figures. A DJ, producer, artist, and entertainer, he has built a remarkable career in the industry. His journey into music began at a young age, gaining recognition when he won the Cool Kids competition at just 18. Over the years, he has cemented his place as a key figure in the urban music scene, making his name synonymous with the genre’s evolution in South Africa.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born and raised in Meadowlands, Zone 3, Soweto, DJ Mahoota (Zynne Sibika) came into the world on March 16, 1971. His musical journey began at 18 when he won the Cool Kids competition, a moment that sparked his passion for music. Determined to pursue his dream, he took piano lessons and studied music to refine his craft.

His career took a significant turn when he met Jakarumba, who later introduced him to Spikiri and Mdu. Together, they formed the legendary group Trompies, which became a cornerstone of South African kwaito music. By 2001, Mahoota had established himself as a solo artist and released his first album.

His stage name, Mahoota, was coined by Oskido after he bought an old, broken-down car and spent a fortune trying to fix it. Despite all his efforts, the only functioning part of the car was its hooter. Amused by the situation, Oskido began calling him Mahoota, and the name stuck.

Career Journey

Mahoota has built a long and successful career in the music industry. He is a founding member of Trompies, one of the original Kwaito groups that has dominated the South African charts for over fifteen years. In addition to his work with Trompies, he is a partner at Kalawa Jazmee Records, an influential independent music label that has been home to artists such as Oskido, Don Laka, Boom Shaka, Mafikizolo, Bongo Maffin, Spikiri, DJ Tira, and Big Nuz.

Alongside Jotham Mbuyisa, known as Vetkuk, Mahoota forms half of the popular duo Vetkuk vs. Mahoota. The duo has released five successful albums, with two—Lesedi and Tshiamo—going Gold. Their total sales have surpassed 400,000 copies. Known for their stylish dress sense and high-energy performances, the duo has been a major force in the industry for over a decade. Their hit single Bula, featuring Thebe, is one of their standout tracks.

Beyond producing music, Vetkuk vs. Mahoota are highly sought-after DJs, performing at major events across South Africa and internationally in cities such as Miami, London, Ibiza, and Mauritius. The famous “Mahoota on the right and Vetkuk on the left” stage setup has become a signature of their performances.

Mahoota is also the co-founder and host of The Spring Day Music Explosion, a major annual festival now in its tenth year. This twelve-show, ten-city tour features 65 artists and DJs from both South Africa and abroad, making it one of the most significant events on the South African music calendar.

His passion for music began when he won the Cool Kids competition at the age of 18. Realizing that music was his true calling, he started taking piano lessons and later pursued formal music studies. His journey took a major turn when he met Jakarumba, who introduced him to Spikiri and Mdu. Together, they formed Trompies, a group that went on to achieve massive success.

In 2001, Mahoota launched his solo career with the release of his debut album. Since then, he has remained a key player in the South African music scene, continually influencing and shaping the industry.

Personal Life

Mahoota is a proud father of eight children. Four of them are with his current wife, and his eldest child is 22 years old. He has been married for over sixteen years and continues to enjoy a stable family life.
