Early Life and Education
DJ Sliqe was born into a Venda family and is the oldest of three children. From an early age, he showed strong academic abilities, often being among the top of his class throughout primary and high school. Despite his good grades, he was always drawn to business and creative ventures. His interest in music started when he was very young, and he had dreams of becoming both a DJ and a producer. By the time he reached Grade 10, he was already DJing at school events. After finishing matric, he enrolled at the University of Johannesburg, where he started sharpening his business skills alongside his growing passion for music.
Career
While studying Logistics at the University of Johannesburg, Lutendo Kungoane—now known as DJ Sliqe—was already thinking like a businessman. He was always looking for ways to turn opportunities into profit. During his time at UJ, he and a friend started learning how to DJ and mix beats on their own. They began organizing their own parties, which soon became regular events, attracting crowds and generating money. They reinvested their earnings by inviting well-known DJs and artists to perform. Before long, DJ Sliqe secured spots as a resident DJ at popular clubs like Club Sway in Sandton and Stones in Melville. Eventually, he dropped out of university to follow his passion for music full-time.
His big break came in 2015 when he co-produced the hit single Do Like I Do with Psyfo. The track featured heavyweight rapper Kwesta and the late Flabba, and it quickly gained widespread airplay. The success of the song pushed Sliqe into the limelight, earning him interviews and media buzz. He later dropped a remix of the track, bringing in more artists like Nadia Nakai, L-Tido, Reason, and Riky Rick. The remix ended up being even bigger than the original and went on to win Best Remix of the Year at the South African Music Awards in 2016, making DJ Sliqe the first hip-hop DJ in the country to receive such recognition.
After the wave of success, DJ Sliqe released more singles and, in September 2016, dropped his debut album Injayam Vol. 1, which featured 14 tracks and collaborations with 18 artists. He followed it up with Injayam Vol. 2 in 2018, continued releasing singles in 2019, and finally dropped his five-track EP Championship Music in 2020. That same year, he was appointed Head of Hip Hop and R&B at Sony Music Entertainment South Africa. Still riding the momentum, he teamed up with Maglera and 25K to release a joint project called Champion Music under Kennel Music, and later dropped a sequel, Champion Music 2, also under an exclusive Sony Music license.
