Early Life and Education
Shebeshxt, born Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke on March 28, 1995, hails from Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, South Africa. He spent part of his childhood in Tembisa with his father before moving to Polokwane in 2020, where he currently resides.
During his appearance on Podcast and Chill with MacG in November 2023, Shebeshxt explained the origin of his stage name. He shared, “They used to call me a Dawg because in my township, I am a general. So they called me Dawg for Doctor Shebeleza.”
The rapper, known for his hit song Ambulance, has one older half-brother. He revealed that his mother had an affair with her partner’s brother, but he was ultimately fathered by his mother’s actual partner. This complicated situation meant he was always meant to be a Chauke.
At the age of 21, while studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering at university, Shebeshxt became a father. However, being unemployed at the time, he relied on his mother to care for his child, which placed a significant financial strain on her. Witnessing his mother struggle to support his daughter left him deeply traumatized.
To ease the financial burden, Shebeshxt turned to the streets, becoming involved in fights and theft. He resorted to snatching phones and gadgets to sell, aiming to support his daughter and lessen the strain on his mother.
Career
The South African rapper is celebrated for his distinctive style and bold persona. Shebeshxt shot to fame with his viral hit Ke Di Shxt Malume, which gained massive traction on TikTok. Blending Bolo House, amapiano, and rap, his music has struck a chord with fans since his debut.
Known for his outspoken opinions on social and political issues, Shebeshxt has also garnered attention for his controversial image and appearances on platforms like Podcast and Chill with MacG. He made history on the podcast by surpassing 1 million views within two days, a milestone achieved without the backing of a record label, television, or radio play. His legal battles and public controversies have further contributed to his prominence.
Shebeshxt’s rise began in 2021 with the success of Ke Di Shxt Malume, which received widespread praise, including from artists like Focalistic. Since then, he has released numerous tracks and an EP titled Top-less Shxt. He has collaborated with well-known South African and international artists, including DJ Maphorisa, Mckay Johnson, Naqua SA, Bayor 97, Phobla on the Beat, Shandesh, and Maqsoul. His growing popularity is reflected in his 354,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify.
In December 2023, Shebeshxt signed a deal with the Italian-based wine brand Lamborghini Wines, further cementing his presence in the industry.
Personal Life and Controversies
In April 2023, the rapper was arrested and faced jail time. On May 9, 2023, he appeared in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on charges including two counts of assault, attempted murder, and malicious damage to property. These charges stemmed from an incident where he allegedly fired four shots in the air at a family home in Ga-Mamaola village. The court denied him bail after the National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in Limpopo stated that more information needed to be gathered. Shebeshxt remained in custody for four months until his release in August 2023. The firearm discharge charges were eventually withdrawn in October 2023.
In December 2023, Shebeshxt encountered legal issues abroad. He was accused of breaching a performance contract on December 2, 2023, in Botswana. On January 6, 2024, the rapper revealed that he had survived an assassination attempt in December 2023 during a gig, claiming that the attack was linked to his refusal to join an occult society.
On January 30, 2024, Shebeshxt was involved in a car accident in Polokwane. His car reportedly collided with a mini-truck, severely damaging the vehicle’s hood and front bumper. Fortunately, no serious injuries were sustained by him or his team.
Tragically, on June 8, 2024, Shebeshxt was involved in another car accident—the second in less than six months. This accident proved fatal, claiming the life of his only daughter, Onthatile Gladys Chuene, a Grade 3 pupil at Northern Academy in Polokwane. The accident occurred as the family was traveling from Polokwane to Lebowakgomo, where he was scheduled to perform at the ANC Siyanqoba Rally. Their Volkswagen Polo collided with a truck, leaving Shebeshxt with severe injuries, including a broken leg and abdominal fractures.
The Limpopo-born rapper is currently recovering from the injuries sustained in the June 2024 accident. Since his daughter’s funeral, he has not been seen in public.
